People are becoming more and more accustomed to using their mobile devices for everyday tasks. As a result, the amount and type of evidence these devices offer to litigators will continue to grow. This is why our primary tool for smartphone investigations is Cellebrite which has been court approved in thousands of cases nationwide. Cellebrite’s physical analyzer tool is the best in the industry for examining data recovered from mobile devices and it is our preferred tool for extracting data from most mobile devices. However, there is not a software tool which supports every mobile device on the market. At times we must use less popular digital forensic software tools or our own python scripts (custom code) to extract data from third party mobile apps.
We take steps to ensure our tools and processes satisfy the Daubert test. We follow proper evidence handling procedures and we validate our procedures and tools prior to using them in a live investigation.
If ESI is to continue to play an important role in investigations, litigators must become accustomed to a much more fractured digital forensic industry whereby an investigator uses a court tested open-source forensic tool such as Paladin to recover data from a Microsoft Surface Pro and Encase or Cellebrite to analyze the recovered data. As technology progresses, digital examiners must think outside the box which entails using custom code and open-source tools to recover data the commercial tools leave behind.
With our smartphone imaging services we include a forensic report of findings which depending on the device may include: text messages, emails, photos, videos, chat messages, web mail and cloud storage artifacts, calendars, call records, web browsing history, voicemail, contacts, GPS location records, documents, downloads, money transfers, and much more.
We provide first time clients of our mobile phone imaging services a forensic software tool and a one-hour training course at no additional cost. The software can be used by your investigators/paralegals to search through the data we recover from the device much more efficiently than manually reviewing the reports which can be over 100 hundred pages long. This software is intended to help investigators uncover the low hanging fruit (e.g. readily available text messages) while our digital examiners focus on advanced techniques to recover hidden data such as encrypted chat messages, GPS locations, web-mail artifacts and much more.
